“Most men can only have sex once. And then it’s all over! Not like women. Women can orgasm again and again and again. If women took full control of that, if they were really encouraged in that, to become these uber-sexual beings, I don’t know what kind of effect that would have on society. It would definitely change the power balance”
For 30,000 years of pre-history, deities were women. Astarte, the ancient Goddess of sex and love, returns to contemporary London, bearing witness to three women who unveil their formative experiences and sexual fantasies.
The women have lived very different lives, traumas and joys. Their fantasies are equally varied spanning the tender to the politically incorrect. Each, however, invites a glimpse into hidden inner worlds and into a place that transcends daily realities.
These unfiltered, anonymous testimonies are vividly brought to life through diverse performers and artists. All the while, Astarte absorbs shame, wounds, taboos and transforms them through her ritualised erotic power.
We wanted to explore the female gaze but beyond camera angles and images. What was more important to us was the spirit on the set and a collective way of working with the women in front of and behind the camera.
